The Cities of Tuff Rocks

Inhabited since ancient times due to its abundant water, flora, fauna, the area is characterized by effusive volcanic rock called "tuff." The ease with which this rock can be worked and excavated has allowed humans to carve out homes and roads.

The Etruscans and the Vie Cave

The Etruscans were the first true civilization to inhabit this land, leaving behind vast necropolises carved deep into the great tufa cliffs. Examples include the majestic tombs of Sovana (like the Ildebranda, Winged Demons, and Siren tombs) and, more notably, the evocative and mysterious Vie Cave. These are colossal ancient pathways, likely with a sacred function, excavated by humans deep into the rock, reaching depths that range between 10 and 25 meters.

The Vie Cave are rich in archaic symbolism, sometimes difficult to pinpoint or interpret, but they undoubtedly represent the greatest expression of Etruscan charm and mystery. A walk through the Vie Cave, surrounded by walls that seem to speak and lush vegetation that awakens the senses, if done mindfully, enchants and disorients, taking our internal clock back several millennia.
