A truly unique aspect, and an example of interfaith collaboration that remains incredibly relevant today, was and still is the presence of a Jewish community perfectly integrated into the cultural fabric of Pitigliano and Sorano. This community, fleeing papal persecutions in the 16th century, escaped from Rome and found refuge in Pitigliano and Sorano. They were welcomed by the Orsini family, who, with social foresight, saw an opportunity to culturally emancipate their people and their county.
Today, due to reduced numbers, the Jewish community is only symbolic, but it's inextricably linked to the local history. A visit to the restored synagogue and the annexed underground Jewish Quarter in Pitigliano, or to the ghetto and small synagogue in Sorano, certainly offers a good reason for reflection on our contemporary times.
