This almost unknown location is considered the largest rock settlement in central Italy, second only to the more famous Sassi di Matera. Its urban fabric developed through the presence of over 200 caves carved into the tuff, which served as human dwellings starting from the 11th century and remained so until the early 19th century.
Even today, as you walk along the tuffaceous spur that once hosted the settlement, the ruins of churches, castles, and fortifications suddenly emerge. The caves, despite the wear of time, still reveal signs of the warm family environment and how it must have appeared to the eyes of the ancient inhabitants.
For more experienced hikers, we also suggest a walk to the sources of the Lente River. Here, a "thermal inversion" has favored and allowed the survival of an unusual Relict Beech Forest that still thrives today at an altitude not exceeding 400 meters above sea level.
