During a stay in Pitigliano, one cannot help but explore its surroundings and visit some unique, perhaps lesser-known, but certainly enchanting places, such as:

  • The Etruscan Necropolis and the Medieval Village of Sovana, with its two remarkably well-preserved Romanesque churches. The Church of Santa Maria dates back to the 13th century and houses a precious pre-Romanesque ciborium from the 8th century, unique in Tuscany. The ancient Cathedral of San Pietro, dating from the 11th century, contains one of the rare surviving examples of "Biblia Pauperum" (Poor Man's Bible). This is a figurative capital where the stone sculpture transforms into a message, through which Romanesque architecture becomes communication.
  • The Village of Sorano, with the underground passages of the Orsini Fortress, a rare example of 15th-century military architecture and defensive strategies that have survived to this day.
  • The Masso Leopoldino (Leopoldino Rock), which rises in the center of Sorano village and offers an enchanting view, an unusual vantage point overlooking the houses of Sorano and the Lente Valley.
  • The Archaeological Area of San Rocco, from which one can enjoy the panorama of Sorano village and fully admire the beauty of the so-called "Matera of Maremma."
